For adults working toward their GED, access and flexibility can make all the difference. Boone County Public Library (BCPL) is expanding its adult education services to make earning a GED more convenient and achievable for county residents.

The Main Library in Burlington is already a certified GED testing site, offering flexible testing hours, including evenings, to accommodate work and family schedules. Since opening, more than 100 individuals have taken their GED exams at the Library, benefiting from a welcoming, local environment designed to reduce stress and barriers.

Building on this success, BCPL will soon open a second GED testing site at its Florence Branch. This expansion brings testing closer to residents who face transportation challenges or limited scheduling options. Many Florence residents currently must travel outside the immediate area to test, often without access to public transportation or after-hours testing. Offering GED testing at the Florence Branch places this critical service within easier reach for many adults striving to improve their education and employment prospects.

BCPL also partners with Gateway Community and Technical College to host GED orientations at various BCPL locations with a focus on the Main Library and Florence Branch. These sessions help patrons understand the GED process, connect with preparation resources, and take the next steps toward testing. With testing coming soon to the Florence Branch, participants will be able to attend orientations, prepare for the exam using Library resources, and complete their GED testing – all in one location.

By expanding GED testing services, Boone County Public Library continues its commitment to lifelong learning, access and equity. Supporting adult learners not only changes individual lives, but also strengthens the local workforce and the overall vitality of the community.

This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.
