Hello! My name is Emily Cornett and I was first hired at the Main Library in 2017, during the dog days of Summer Reading! For the first year and a half that I worked at the Library, I created Kindergarten to 2nd grade programs and storytimes. At the beginning of 2019, I then transitioned to Early Literacy and have been working part-time in the Early Literacy Department ever since! I’m still doing storytimes (though we have been creating these virtually for the past year), while also getting to share my passion and knowledge of Early Childhood Development. I currently plan preschool programs, create curriculums for and facilitate grant opportunities, provide developmental screenings to families in the community, and work with some of the most creative and talented people I have ever known.

I grew up in Northern Kentucky and went all the way through school years (elementary-high school) with my husband and a few other life-long friends. Growing up, I spent most of my time doing competitive dance and being involved in my church. I graduated from Northern Kentucky University with my Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education. I taught in the public school system for 3 years before leaving the classroom to spend more time raising my daughter. I decided that although I loved my chosen career field, I was spending more time assessing and encouraging other people’s children and didn’t have much left in me for my own child. I stepped away from the classroom and stayed at home with my daughter for a year before I decided to look for part-time employment. When I was hired at BCPL, I was 17 weeks pregnant with my son and I have been so fortunate to be able to spend time at home with my kids during the week, while still working in a field I am so passionate about!

Aside from being a total nerd about all things Early Childhood Development, I love spending time with my family and having new experiences with my kids. Pre-pandemic, we spent a lot of time at the Cincinnati Zoo, the Children’s Museum, and we frequented Miss Jenny’s Music and Movement Storytime. The pandemic shut down most of our favorite places, but it led us to our love of hiking in the woods, finding a good creek to play in, and creating something totally random out of our craft supplies. Some of my other hobbies include making charcuterie boards (they MUST be both delicious and aesthetically pleasing), spending an insane amount of time researching and trying new skincare products, and putting things in online shopping carts and not buying any of it.

I have met some of the most wonderful people while working at BCPL and have developed lasting friendships with coworkers and have met families through storytime whom I love dearly. If we haven’t met yet, let’s be friends!
