Hi! My name is Kelsey and I’ve been at BCPL for about three years. Most of that time has been as the Community Events Liaison (a fancy name for “adult programmer”) at the Main Library. I think my favorite thing about working at the Library has been the variety of experiences I’ve had so far. My position encompasses a lot of different things such as fairs, art exhibits, music, and more. I never knew libraries provided so much outside of books until I was the one planning a lot of it!
I grew up in Lexington, KY as one of two girls and later attended the University of Kentucky for two degrees. I got married in October 2017 and then moved to Northern Kentucky. Before moving, I worked for the arts and cultural division of Lexington’s Parks and Recreation Department. Much of my time was spent assisting with and planning aspects of major city events, along with working with the newly created arts center. I didn’t think that would lead eventually lead me to my current position but it did!
Growing up, I was heavily involved in dance. I haven’t been able to take classes for a while, but am ready to try it again! In general, I have always been a fan of performing arts, whether I was participating in them or spectating. I actually took my husband to his first musical when we began dating, a high school production of Into the Woods. Now we have Broadway season tickets and he has become quite the musical critic anytime we see a production that isn’t Broadway-caliber.
Outside of the arts, I love spending time with my dog, Pepper. She is basically our child. Pepper has an entire toy box and several different outfits. Since she is an Australian Cattle Dog mix, she is extremely high energy and needs a lot of activity! Several of my shoes, a chair, and a stack of magazines and newspapers took the brunt of our ignorance before we figured out how to better manage her energy. We go on a lot of walks and hikes to supplement doggie daycare and trips to the dog park (when the fields are dry enough to use). This past winter, Pepper got her first real snow experience. She absolutely loved it, which is funny because she hates rain and swimming.
Also, a fun fact about me is that I’m a big Disney fan. I’ve been to Disney World close to 30 times in addition to a trip to Disneyland and 2 visits to Disneyland Paris. It’s the place my family almost always chose to visit growing up and still visits to this day. I love the movies, the characters and Disney playlists are perfect for road trips, or when I just need a little extra pep in my step. Will I ever outgrow Disney? I’m pretty sure that at this point, the answer is clearly “no.”
The best thing about my job is that it’s rarely boring. No two days are exactly the same. I tend to lose interest quickly when I’m bored, so I like the ability to shake things up. I know that tomorrow will be at least a little different than today, and that’s exactly what I need!
