BCPL lost a co-worker and friend earlier this year to pancreatic cancer at the young age of 41. Sam was an invaluable part of our business department, known for her ability to streamline processes, all while balancing life as a devoted Mom and spouse. Her sudden and shocking diagnosis is a reminder of how silent yet aggressive pancreatic cancer can be. We didn’t know much about this disease until it touched our lives. By the time Sam began experiencing symptoms, the disease had already advanced, leaving her with little time to fight and even less time to prepare for what was coming.

Pancreatic cancer is a significant and growing concern. It’s the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, with a five-year survival rate of just 12% (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network). What makes this disease particularly challenging is that it is known as the “silent killer” because it often goes undetected. Early symptoms such as abdominal pain, unintended weight loss, jaundice, etc. can be subtle or attributed to other conditions. As a result, nearly 80% of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, and its survival rate remains among the lowest of major cancers.

I share our BCPL family story not just to grieve, but to honor Sam, bring awareness to this devastating disease, and inspire action. Pancreatic Cancer Awareness is an opportunity to learn more and spread the word.

In December, our BCPL family will wear purple bracelets in Sam’s honor and strive to make a change in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Every small effort can make a difference. We miss you, Sam.
