October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to learn about how to protect yourself online.

In today’s digital age, being connected to the internet is a part of our everyday lives, whether we’re shopping, banking, working, or simply staying in touch with friends and family. However, with this convenience comes the risk of cyber threats. Boone County Public Library is here to help you stay safe online with practical tips and resources.

Earlier this year, BCPL’s IT Department, with aid from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), successfully repelled a ransomware attack. This malicious software would block access to our systems or data until a ransom was paid if not properly addressed. The ransomware was isolated to a single desktop and promptly disconnected from the network using scanning tools provided by DHS. Fortunately, there was no data breach. The ransomware was likely delivered via an email purporting to be from USPS.

To enhance our security, BCPL has enrolled in additional protective measures that provide continuous network and vulnerability scanning of the library’s publicly accessible networks and systems. Additionally, a new endpoint computer security tool will be implemented on each computer to monitor and mitigate security threats adding another layer of protection to our firewall.

  • Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Avoid using obvious choices like “password123” or your birthdate.
  • Consider using a password manager to create and store your passwords securely.

2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

  • MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring you to verify your identity in two or more ways.
  • This could be a text message code, an email, or even a fingerprint scan.

3. Be Wary of Phishing Scams

  • Phishing is when cybercriminals trick you into giving them your information by pretending to be a legitimate source.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links in emails or text messages, especially if you don’t recognize the sender.
  • Always double-check the sender’s email address before responding.

4. Keep Your Software Up to Date

  • Regularly updating your computer, smartphone and apps ensures you have the latest security patches.
  • Turn on automatic updates to make this process easier.

5. Use Secure Wi-Fi Networks

  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi for activities that involve personal information, such as online banking.
  • If you must use public Wi-Fi, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your data.

Cybersecurity for Families:

Teaching children about cybersecurity is just as important. Here are some tips to keep your family safe:

  • Talk About Online Safety: Discuss the importance of not sharing personal information, such as their full name, address, or school name, with strangers online.
  • Set Rules for Online Behavior: Create guidelines for screen time and appropriate websites.
  • Monitor Online Activity: Use parental controls to manage the apps and websites your children can access.
